Commencé en 1997, le Festival du Film des Nuits Noires de Tallinn est devenu l’un des plus grands festivals de cinéma d’Europe du Nord et l’une des plates-formes régionales les plus actives, accueillant plus de 1000 invités et délégués de l’industrie et plus de 160 journalistes. Le festival projette environ 250 longs métrages et plus de 300 courts métrages et animations, attirant annuellement 80 000 spectateurs.
Depuis 2014, le festival détient l’accréditation FIAPF pour la tenue d’un programme de compétition internationale, ce qui place le festival dans la catégorie A des festivals de cinéma, aux côtés de 14 autres festivals dans le monde.

Un Loup de PÖFF est un animal de meute qui sait qu’il ira plus loin en travaillant avec les autres. Sans vous, notre public de cinéma et nos soutiens, ce festival de cinéma, largement assemblé sur une pure passion en 1997, ne serait pas ce qu’il est aujourd’hui. Chaque année, PÖFF est maintenu en mouvement constant par une merveilleuse collaboration où le public et les films sont liés par des volontaires, plus de 300 à ce jour. Ensemble dans notre petit Estonie, nous avons réussi à remplir les nuits noires de novembre de lumières boréales uniques qui se manifestent comme des expériences cinématographiques lumineuses sur les écrans de cinéma et attirent des cinéastes de différents coins du monde pour tout partager avec nous.
Les lieux de rassemblement des Loups de PÖFF dans les cinémas estoniens restent les mêmes, mais les routes sont différentes chaque année. Outre la détermination et le courage, les conditions préalables à la croissance de PÖFF comprennent la volonté et le désir de voir au-delà de l’horizon afin d’élargir constamment notre vision du monde. Ainsi, le programme de PÖFF dépasse toujours sa zone de confort. Les Loups de PÖFF n’ont pas peur de nouveaux espaces culturels, de questions brûlantes et d’émotions qui nous font rire, nous étonnent et nous bougent dans leur authenticité vivifiante.
Le Festival du Film des Nuits Noires (en estonien PÖFF – Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival) vise à présenter une sélection complète de cinéma mondial au public estonien, balte et nord-européen.
Le Festival est reconnu par la FIAPF (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films) et depuis 2014, il est accrédité pour organiser une compétition internationale de longs métrages non spécialisés, aux côtés de 15 autres festivals de cinéma dans le monde (dont Berlin, Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Moscou, Venise, San Sebastian, Varsovie, Tokyo et d’autres).
Le Festival du Film des Nuits Noires propose également des sections compétitives spécialisées, des sections non compétitives, ainsi que des sous-festivals pour les films pour la jeunesse, les courts métrages et les animations.
Le Festival est organisé par l’organisation à but non lucratif MTÜ Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival (en anglais, ONG Festival du Film des Nuits Noires).

Black Nights Film Festival Programme
The Black Nights Film Festival programme includes three competitive sections and various non-competitive sections for feature films.
Official Selection – Competition
The Official Selection – Competition is an international non-specialised competition presenting feature-length (60 minutes and over) films from around the world completed after the 15th of September 2022.
Priority will be given to films with a World or International Premiere. The minimum premiere requirement is a European Regional Premiere. European films and co-produced films presented in their country of origin remain eligible.
The Festival will not accept films in the Official Selection – Competition that has been in competition at another festival accredited by FIAPF as a Competitive Feature Film Festival. The Festival reserves the right to evaluate eligible films for the competition on a case by case basis.
A film in this competition is eligible for a maximum of two awards (including Grand Prix) within the competition. The Grand Prix and Best Director award and the grant cannot be given to the same film.
First Feature Competition
The First Feature Competition is an international competition for debut films. The competition presents feature-length debut (60 minutes and over, first-time feature film directing status) films from around the world completed after 15th of September 2021.
Priority will be given to films with a World or International Premiere. The minimum premiere requirement is a European Regional Premiere. European films and co-produced films presented in their country of origin remain eligible.
The Festival will not accept films in the First Feature Competition that have been in competition at another festival accredited by FIAPF as a Competitive Feature Film Festival. The festival reserves the right to evaluate eligible films for competition on a case by case basis.
Baltic Film Competition
The Baltic Film Competition presents feature (documentaries and animation included) length (60 minutes and over) films from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania or with significant participation from one of these countries completed after 15th of September 2021.
Priority will be given to films with a World or International premiere, but films which have previously premiered in Estonia are also eligible. The participation of the film in any other competition of the Festival does not exclude the eligibility for Baltic Film Competition. The festival reserves the right to evaluate eligible films for the competition on a case by case basis.
Rebels with a Cause Competition
Rebels with a Cause Competition programme showcases the untraditional means of expression of filmmaking, as well as innovative narrative or dramaturgy, symbiosis with other forms of art and new takes on technical solutions or in aesthetics. The Competition incorporates both a full feature and a short film section. The films must be completed after the 15th of September 2021. The minimum premiere requirement is a European Premiere.
Priority will be given to films with a World, International or European premieres. The festival reserves the right to evaluate eligible films for the competition on a case by case basis.
Non-competitive programme
Films submitted for the non-competitive programme, or not selected for competitions, can be invited to other sections with a minimum requirement being their Estonian Premiere. There is no geographic restriction for films in non-competitive sections. The films must be completed after the 15th of September 2022.
