Multi-Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer has revealed that she keeps the whip from her time as Catwoman in Batman Returns inside her closet. Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle was arguably one of the biggest talking points surrounding the 1992 Tim Burton sequel, with the actress doing for Catwoman what Jack Nicholson did for the Joker.

Though the character now retains its own place in cinematic history, Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Catwoman involved no small amount of sacrifice. The latex catsuit was one of 60 others, each of which carried a $1,000 price tag. They were custom fit to Pfeiffer and so tight that the actress had to be covered in talcum powder in order to ease the process of putting it on. Once in the suit, a 12-14 hour workday with only one permitted bathroom break was standard, making for a very uncomfortable shoot for Pfeiffer. Thankfully, the difficulties involved in bringing the character to life on the big screen didn’t mar Pfeiffer’s performance, which comes off as smooth and effortless – and at times downright frightening. Add in Catwoman’s proficiency with a whip and Batman Returns really does offer audiences something unique.
