See Forever
Synopsis
Until September 11, 2001, many tourists went up to the 107 floor of the World Trade Center towers to film the view of New York. Today, thanks to the One World Trade Center, it’s again possible for tourists to go up and film this view of New York. How did the images change?
Director’s Note:
In this twenty-minute documentary, which I’ve organized into three parts, I wanted to use the videos of several families who visited the WTC before 2001. I wanted to edit them and take the viewer on a kind of sightseeing tour of the now-ghostly building, all the way to the top. From the 107th floor, all the cameras take turns framing, like a dance, the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building.
I then wanted to compare these images with others. This time, it’s the day after 9/11. Firefighters are filming the rubble, searching for bodies or survivors. With no view of NY from the 107th floor, they are condemned to remain on the ground. At this point, we think that these tourist images taken from the 107th floor will no longer exist.
Then the last part of the film begins, in 2015. A new tower is built, in symbolic revenge. Even taller. Even more dazzling. Once again, tourists flock to it, to climb to the very top and film. The view of New York is back. The Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty are once again the icons to be filmed at all costs. But that’s not all. Now it’s the tower itself that’s showcasing its technological prowess.
The roof of the world is now inaccessible, confined behind screens and glass. Behind the name of the attraction, See Forever, there is a promise made to visitors…
The film invites viewers to consider a number of questions: Can we start again? Can we rebuild everything? Even a view, an image of NY? Or is it the image of 9/11? Why is it so important to regain sight?
